ExxonMobil is an American multinational oil and gas corporation. It was formed in 1999 through the merger of Exxon and Mobil. Both companies have a long history dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Exxon was founded in 1870 by John D Rockefeller and other investors. The company quickly grew to dominate the oil industry in the United States. It was one of the largest companies in the world by the turn of the 20th century. In 1911, the U S Supreme Court ordered the breakup of Standard Oil due to antitrust concerns. It was separated into 34 independent companies, one of which was Standard Oil of New Jersey, which later became Exxon.
The company known as Mobil was originally Standard Oil of New York, created in 1911 as part of the breakup of Standard Oil. The company became known for its high-quality gasoline and lubricant products and changed its name to Mobil in 1966. The company diversified into natural gas and other energy-related businesses.
Exxon and Mobil, two of the largest and most powerful companies in the world, decided to merge in 1990. The deal was worth $73 7 billion, creating ExxonMobil. Since then, ExxonMobil has become known for its exploration, production, transportation and refining of crude oil, natural gas and petroleum products.
