Charlie Ergen, Candy Ergen and Jim DeFranco founded Dish Network in 1980 as a television service provider that was initially tailored to bring satellite TV to rural areas of the US not served by cable providers. Since then the brand has grown and now offers a wide variety of programming and services. In the 1990s, Dish Network invested in new HD programming and DVR technologies which enabled them to reach more customers, challenging traditional cable providers.
