Eddy Hartenstein, who had earlier been involved in the launch of satellite technology utilized by DirecTV, founded the Direct-to-home satellite television service in 1994. This service experienced a fast rise in popularity as it provided high quality programming and was able to transmit a wide variety of channels to regions that were underserved or remote. Initially only available to some parts of the US, DirecTV’s selection of channels was limited.

DirecTV, following its launch, extended its services and advanced its technology by including new channels and characteristics like HD programming and interactive services. In 2015, it was taken over by AT&T and is now a subsidiary of the telecom firm.
