Originally founded in 1963 as Consumer Value Stores, CVS Health is a pharmacy and healthcare corporation based in Lowell, Massachusetts. During the 70s and 80s, the company experienced an accelerated growth due to new store openings and the acquisition of other pharmacy chains. In 1996, they began providing online pharmacy services and four years later released private label products under the “CVS” brand.
In 2007, CVS acquired the PBM Caremark, allowing for an expansion into the healthcare industry. As a result of this shift in focus, the company rebranded from CVS Caremark to CVS Health in 2014. Currently, their services are provided through their 9800 retail pharmacies, online pharmacy stores and through healthcare plans and PBMs via their clinics.
