Paul Lamfrom, who had immigrated to the US from Germany, founded Columbia Sportswear in 1938. Starting as a distributor of hats, he soon began producing his own headwear under the label of Columbia Hat Company.

During the 1960s, Columbia Sportswear (formerly known as Columbia) ventured into the sportswear business and released a collection of skiwear. In the 70s, their focus shifted to outdoor and active wear; and in the 80s their most popular product – The Bugaboo parka – was launched. This breakthrough garment caused a sensation and made them an authority in outdoor apparel. Currently, they are an international name that sells a variety of items such as jackets, trousers, shoes etc. for being outdoorsy or active.
