How Many NFL Teams In California?

How Many NFL Football Teams Are In California In 2023?

California has always been famous for a large number of sports teams. And for now, it houses 18 professional sports teams and most of them are very successful. There are 32 football teams in National Football League, 3 of them are located in California State – Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Chargers, and San Francisco 49ers. There was another one team with California roots till 2019, but in 2020 Oakland Raiders were renamed to Las Vegas Raiders and moved from Alameda, California to Henderson, Nevada.

What NFL Football Teams Are From California?

1. Los Angeles Rams

Established in 1936
First season: 1938
Play in SoFi Stadium
Team colors: Millennium Blue, New Century Gold, and White

The Los Angeles Rams headquartered in Agoura Hills, California. Are the oldest NFL football team from California and was established in 1936. Throughout its history, the team changed several names – Cleveland Rams (1936–1942, 1944–1945), St. Louis Rams (1995–2015), Los Angeles Rams (1946–1994, 2016–present). The team has won only one Superbowl championship in 1999. But despite this, it has great love and support from its fans.

2. Los Angeles Chargers

Established in 1959
First season: 1960
Play in SoFi Stadium
Team colors: Navy Blue, Powder Blue, Gold, and White

The Los Angeles Chargers are a professional football team located in Costa Mesa, California. The team was established on August 14, 1959, in Los Angeles. But in 1961 moved to San Diego and was renamed to San Diego Chargers. Finally, in 2017 team was renamed again to Los Angeles Chargers and moved back to Los Angeles where its history began.

In June 2020, it is planned to launch a new stadium that will serve as a home for Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams. It’s a big entertainment complex located in Inglewood, California. The photo below shows this stadium during construction.

3. San Francisco 49ers

Established in 1944
First season: 1946
Play in Levi’s Stadium
Team colors: 49ers Red and Gold

The team was established on June 4, 1944, with the location in the San Francisco Bay Area. More than 75 years does not change its location. Today headquartered in Marie P. DeBartolo Sports Center Santa Clara, California.

The 49ers have won the Super Bowl championship five times in 14 years period, in 1982, 1985, 1989, 1990, and 1995. It is the most successful NFL team from California.

4. Oakland Raiders

Technicians, this team is no longer a California team because since 2020 renamed to Las Vegas Raiders and headquartered in Henderson, Nevada. But I decided to include it in memory of many years spent in the territory of California as Oakland Raiders (1960–1981; 1995–2019) headquartered in Alameda, California; and as Los Angeles Raiders(1982–1994) headquartered in El Segundo, California
